I believe my practice pitch went relatively well as I appeared confident and spoke fluently, however there were some instances where either stuttered, had to pause for a while to think or read the PowerPoint wrong and had to re-read it. I was able to answer most questions but not all as I still wasn't fully confident on the idea and hadn't thought everything through yet, but I managed to work around it and eventually come up with some answers. For my final pitch I will collect my ideas better, along with have less writing on the screen so it is easier to read out and think about it, I will also have a better idea about my plot and characters.
Transcription of Pitch (Not Directly Quoted):
03:50
Q: With the use of the narration, are you essentially listening to the thoughts inside their head?
A: Yes.
Q: Is this something you would want to incorporate in your show?
A: Yes, as it allows you to understand what's really going on.
Added points: It also allows you to know in depth the characters true emotions and thoughts in that scene, allowing you to further sympathise or relate to more.
04:35
Q: So it would have a very direct point of view, so we can see everything from the point of view of the main protagonist so we can experience things along side the character.
A: Yes.
Added points: this is to make the story very clear and show in depth the struggles he is facing with his grief, addiction, wrong doings and emotions.
07:40
Q: What about the main character? Who is he representing?
A: I'm not quite sure yet.
Q: You haven't assigned him an ethnicity or a back story yet?
A: No
Added points: After consideration, I decided he would be a Black British teenager who lives and is from a rough area in Leeds who lives in a flat with his mother and father. I decided he would be Black British as I wanted to add diversity into my show along with remove the stereotype of young, black men and drugs and show that it may be due to discrimination and struggles they face such as mental health issues.
11:30
Q: Do you think there will be any over-left wing political views represented in your show?
A: Possibly, I wasn't thinking of doing a direct statement. I suppose as it is about young people and their struggles with drugs and violence it could be about how the government need to help.
Added Points: I believe there will be over-left wing political views represented in my product as there are themes of suicide, drugs, the struggles of men's mental health and therapy.
18:55
Q: So the shock of the hospitalisation or overdose causes a massive change in direction?
A: Yes
Added points: After consideration a decided a hospitalisation and the protagonists' friends constantly saying that he needs help will allow him to realise that there is a way out of this struggle he is going through and he can get over his drug use and grief.
19:50
Q: When you say you are going to use commercial music do you mean production music that isn't by an actual artist?
A: Yes
Added points: After consideration, I decided that I will use commercial music from the 'indie pop' and 'indie rock' genres as the lyrics include the struggles of young people and are relatively left which which the target audience will understand and relate to. This commercial music will be from smaller artists/bands to keep costs down and allow these smaller artists to become more popular and earn more money themselves as a side effect.
Questions I think I may be asked in my final pitch:
- Why have you decided to represent your character in this way?
I decided his ethnicity would be Black-British as I wanted to include diversity in my TV show. I decided he would also be a male as the aim of my show is to bring awareness to the struggles men face with their mental health as they believe they cannot get help and should keep it to themselves due to the way society is.
- What different locations will you use?
I will use different locations such as a school, and one classroom in that school. I will also use Sam's flat as a location, public toilets as a location, and Myah's house as a location. Therefore, I need to gain access to a school classroom, a flat, a house, and public toilets.
- How will you keep locations, props and costumes on a low budget?
I will keep locations on a low budget as it is filmed in a rough area, therefore making it cheaper. I will also only use a few locations which will further keep costs down. Props will be kept low budget by buying cheap, fake props such as fake drugs on websites such as eBay. Costumes will be kept on a low budget as actors will simply wear their everyday clothes.
- Why have you decided it will be set when it is?
I decided it would be set around 2005 because it would give the show an old-school vibe, and the music will fit with the time period.
- What is the backstory of your character?
The backstory of my character is that he hangs around with people who do drugs but has never got involved with them, he has always lived in rough areas with his parents.
- What motivates the characters?
His relationship with his love interest and friendship with Thom motivate him to get help, along with his widow mother who hates seeing him struggle the way he is. Therefore, motivating him to stop taking drugs and get help.
- How will your show appeal to the target audience?
My show will appeal to my target audience as it will include the genres of Indie pop and Indie rock which they will most likely listen to, the characters will wear clothes like them, and has crime and gritty realistic elements to it which my target audience like.
How I will improve my pitch:
I try to be more enthusiastic about my idea to really sell it and I will think more about representation of my characters, their motivation and their backstories, to allow my audience to be able to relate to them. I will also think more about different elements to my show which include props, costumes and locations and how I will keep the costs down for these. I will consider how my character is portrayed, for example is it through his dialogue with other characters on the screen or is it through narration, or both? Finally, I will consider how it will appeal to my target audience whether it's through the characters, audio or visuals.
