P4 - Production Log

Camera Set Up and Equipment

The camera I chose to film with was a Sony Alpha 7R III. I set it on 25fps with the shutter speed of 1/50th of a second of exposure. Along with setting it to have shutter speed priority on the 'S' setting. This allowed the shutter to be open for the right amount of time in relation to the fps, and to allow the camera to adjust the aperture to match the exposure to be able to produce more natural looking footage unlike iPhones for example.

I used a tripod for the majority of my shots to keep the shots steady and appear like videos in professional movies and other videos. With the camera being steady, it allows for the subject to be easier to focus on as you are not thinking about the camera movements, therefore making my video more appealing.

No additional lights were used as my video is set on the moor during the day, where there is very little shade to block the sun out and any shots which appear darker  (for example the beginning scene at the tent) has been done on purpose to match the time of day its set at.

Equipment used as props were a tent and camping stool (used for the beginning and ending tent scenes), a map (used in the first verse) and a pen and notebook (used in the third verse).

Filming Process

Shoot 1: Filming took place from around 13:00 to 14:30. People included in the process for this shoot were Rory (the main character you see in the video) and myself operating the camera. We filmed in multiple different locations on this shoot, but had two main locations for the first instrumental and first verse. Initially we filmed in a wooded area for the first verse. Then we moved up to near the top of the moor next to a stream (along the way we filmed some walking shots for choruses), and set up the tent for the first tent scene at the beginning of the video. On the way back, we filmed another series of walking shots for choruses.

Shoot 2: Filming took place from around 13:30 to 14:30. People included in the process for this shoot were Rory (the main character you see in the video) and myself operating the camera. We filmed in 3 different locations on this shoot. Initially we filmed next to a waterfall for verse 3 and then once we completed the shots needed for that, we also filmed further down the stream and across it for more walking shots to be used in choruses.

Shoot 3: Filming took place from around 15:00 to 16:00. People included in the process for this shoot were Rory (the main character you see in the video), Thom (who is the person you see playing the guitar instrumentals), Sam (who was not seen on camera but operated the camera), and myself (who you see playing the drums in instrumental and set up the camera). We filmed in one location which was just above the tarn on a bench and filmed all the shots needed in the instrumentals and part of the chorus.

Shoot 4: Filming took place from around 13:15 to 16:00. People included in the process for this shoot were Rory
(the main character you see in the video) and myself operating the camera. We filmed at many different locations. One was at a waterfall just next to White Wells where we reshot one of the scenes. The next was on the way up higher on the moor where we found a large rock and filmed a verse there, we found a flat part near the top of the moor and filmed the end tent scene and on our way back we filmed the last walking shots needed for choruses.

Shoot 5: Filming took place from around 15:15 to 15:45. People included in the process for this shoot were Rory
(the main character you see in the video) and myself operating the camera. We filmed in one location which was a slight more built up location at the top of town near the tarn to get the last shots we needed.

Reviewing Rushes

Shoot 1 Rushes Review: Whilst reviewing the rushes I noticed a few clips which appeared to be unusable in the music video. I had accidentally got the tripod in view during an over the shoulder shot. This shot was then re-filmed during Shoot 4. A couple more examples is during Shoot 1 a few walking shots were too dark and were fully scrapped and not replaced. Other shots which were scrapped were shots we re-filmed on scene such as the first shot you see of Rory sat in front of the tent where it pans out. These were re-filmed as I believed the pan was either too quick, jolty or I did not leave enough space before and after the pan.

Shoot 2 Rushes Review: Whilst reviewing rushes I noticed one clip which I believed didn't fit in with the video, as it was just one walking shot from our journey to location and I felt it wouldn't fit in with any other walking shots from any other choruses. Therefore, I scrapped this clip.

Shoot 3 Rushes Review: During filming, we decided to film a clip of Thom playing on the neck-end of the guitar on the frets which we had filmed in case there was extra space on the timeline or we needed another instrumental shot. Whilst reviewing rushes I realised that we did not need this back-up clip and decided to scrap it.

Shoot 4 Rushes Review: During filming we found a good and better location for the third verse at the waterfall so we completely re-filmed that scene, scrapping a few clips we filmed in shoot 2. Whilst reviewing rushes I noticed a couple clips which were appeared to be unusable in the video. The first one was a shot of Rory (the main actor) getting up and walking away from the waterfall scene, this was scrapped as I felt I couldn't fit it in the video how I wanted. The second shot was one of Rory sitting on the rock in the fourth verse, the sun was too bright and caused the camera to automatically reduce to aperture to let less light in and reduce the exposure and thus darken the video, so this clip was also scrapped.

Shoot 5 Rushes Review: Whilst reviewing rushes I had realised that I filmed one shot too few for the verse we filmed, so I will have to rearrange the clips in the fourth verse to make the clips fit as they will be too short and leave gaps in their original places.

Unusable Shots

Here are some specific examples of shots which were unusable, with reasons included as to why I was unable to included them in the final video (some of which may have previously been stated).

Shot 1: The camera was too shaky and would not focus, also at wrong angle so you couldn't see the map properly, tripod was also in the shot.

Shot 2: I tried to walk backwards whilst he was walking towards me, to create the effect that the camera was moving along with him but the shot type was staying the same, however this was very difficult as the camera became shaky as the ground was gravelly and I was walking backwards.

Shot 3: The shot was too dark and I was unable to make it brighter with the same quality on Final Cut Pro.

Shot 4: Rory was unable to get out the tent and the shot was too dark anyway.

Shot 5: I was unable to get a smooth pan across, so we had to retake it.

Shot 6: I couldn't get a smooth zoom out and pan at the same time so decided to scrap the concept of zooming out in that shot anyway.

Shot 7: The shot was too dark and I was unable to make it brighter with the same Quality on Final Cut Pro.

Shot 8: I couldn't find a place in my music video to have this shot. There was never a specific intention for this shot as it was filmed whilst we were walking down from the moor from filming.

Shot 9: The weather was not up to par with what I wanted it to be as I wanted it to be sunny and it was very gloomy that day, resulting in this shot having the wrong mood and being too dark.

Shot 10-13: These shots were a whole scene we filmed on the same day as the last unusable shot, so again it was too gloomy and the weather was not good, creating the wrong mood - you may even be able to see it slightly raining in these shots. This scene was for the third verse of my music video seen at the duration 01:30 in my music video.

Logging Rushes

I decided to organise my rushes by having each verse in a separate folder as they are all shot at individual locations and contain shots which link together to create a unique scene. During filming in all of my shoots, whilst we were travelling from location to location we would film walking shots for the choruses 1-3 so I decided to place those in one folder and have the final chorus, which involves more emotion and speed in its own folder. Clips we shot for the instrumentals which were all shot at one location but are for different parts of the music video are also contained in one folder. The 2 tent scenes are located in one folder and all clips which I had to scrap are in one folder too.
